A fresh political storm is brewing in Kenya after outspoken politician Moses Kuria declared that he would relocate to Afghanistan if Kalonzo Musyoka becomes President.
Kuria, who previously served as a senior economic adviser to President William Ruto, made the controversial remarks during a televised interview on March 19, 2026. His comments have since ignited debate about the 2027 General Election and the credibility of potential presidential contenders.
In his remarks, Kuria openly dismissed Kalonzo as a viable option for the country’s top seat, questioning his ability to emerge as a front-runner despite his long political career.
“Maybe people do not see it, but what is their option? Kalonzo Musyoka? Me, I’ll move to Afghanistan if Kalonzo becomes president,” Kuria said, adding that he understands how challenging governing Kenya can be.
The statement, delivered partly in jest but loaded with political undertones, reflects Kuria’s skepticism about Kalonzo’s leadership prospects ahead of the next election cycle.
Kuria went further to interrogate Kalonzo’s political trajectory, suggesting that his repeated alliances particularly with the late Raila Odinga may have weakened his independent political standing.
He pointed out that Kalonzo had supported Odinga in multiple elections, even serving as his running mate twice, yet has failed to translate that experience into a commanding position within the opposition.
According to Kuria, Kalonzo should have capitalized on the political networks and support base built over the years, especially in key regions such as Nyanza, Western, and the Coast. Instead, he argued, the Wiper leader has struggled to position himself as the undisputed opposition flagbearer.
Predictions for 2027 Politics
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Kuria predicted that Kalonzo will still contest the presidency due to expectations from his support base but ultimately lose. He further suggested that, in the aftermath, Kalonzo could follow a familiar path of joining the government.
“Kalonzo will be on the ballot… then he’ll lose… then he’ll join the government,” Kuria claimed.
His remarks come at a time when Kalonzo is positioning himself as a key figure within a re-energized opposition coalition, alongside prominent leaders such as Rigathi Gachagua and Martha Karua.
Kuria’s Own Political Plans
Beyond his criticism of rivals, Kuria also revealed his own political ambitions. He confirmed that he has shifted allegiance to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and plans to contest for the Gatundu South parliamentary seat in 2027.
He expressed confidence in UDA’s chances in the upcoming elections, even boasting about his influence in Mount Kenya politics and his ability to sway legislators from rival camps.
Kuria’s remarks highlight the increasingly charged political atmosphere as Kenya inches closer to the 2027 General Election. With alliances shifting and leaders positioning themselves, the battle for State House is already taking shape.
While some may view Kuria’s statement as political banter, others see it as a reflection of deeper divisions within Kenya’s political landscape where loyalty, strategy, and public perception will play a decisive role in determining the country’s next leader.
