Retired Uhuru Kenyatta has politely declined a planned visit by a group of young Kenyans to his private residence in Ichaweri, Gatundu South, Kiambu County. In a statement released on Sunday, February 22, 2026, his office said that although the spirit of the initiative was appreciated, proper communication channels were not followed and, as such, he was unable to host the delegation.
In the official statement issued by his Communication Secretary, Kanze Dena, Uhuru Kenyatta underscored his deep respect for the energy, ideas, and patriotism of Kenya’s youth. He reiterated his belief that intergenerational dialogue is vital to the country’s future but emphasized that any engagement must be properly coordinated in advance.
“Former President Kenyatta remains open to meeting and exchanging views in a dignified manner that fosters unity and mutual respect. Kenya belongs to all of us. Let us always choose dialogue over disruption and engagement over division,” the statement said.
His office clarified that it had not received a formal request for the meeting and encouraged organisers to follow established procedures to ensure structured, peaceful, and meaningful interactions.
According to additional reporting, the planned visit was meant to be a courtesy call from a group of young leaders who sought to recognize Kenyatta’s role in empowering youth participation in national leadership and to seek mentorship ahead of the upcoming 2027 General Election. They described the trip as part of a broader political awakening and effort to redefine youth engagement in Kenyan politics.
However, the former president’s office reiterated that formal channels must be used to facilitate such engagements both to allow proper planning and to uphold security and logistical protocols.
This is not the first time the former president has addressed misleading reports. In recent weeks, Kenyatta’s office also distanced him from online claims alleging he was scheduled to meet other political figures to discuss future election strategies labeling these claims as unfounded and spread without official confirmation.
